Provincial Family Councils

Provincial Family Councils provide an informed and unified voice of families to improve child and youth mental health. IF led development of the BC Provincial Family Council on Child & Youth Mental Health. Through this process, IF has developed a template that other provinces will use to develop their own Provincial Family Councils.

What Is It?

The BC Provincial Family Council was launched in May 2010 with four distinct goals and objectives:

  1. Create an informed and unified voice of families to improve Child & Youth Mental Health.
    • By ensuring broad representation of families on the council
    • By connecting with community-based groups
  2. Provide input in the development of plans, policies, programs, research and practices to improve the mental health of children, youth and their families.
    • By linking with relevant planning committees and networks
  3. Promote families as allies in child and youth mental health care.
    • By identifying and creating opportunities for partnerships between families and professionals at all levels of the system of care
  4. Ensure evaluations of child and youth mental health research, programs and services include outcomes that are meaningful to families.
    • By providing opportunities for family input into the design of evaluations
